Pasture Boarding

Our Unique Twist on Boarding:

WORTH THE READ TO SEE IF YOU ARE A FIT

At Wild Estate, we have embraced our version of what pasture equine boarding should look like and have found that it diverges significantly from most people’s idea of conventional practices. Our approach defies the norm of “traditional” boarding, as we exclusively provide pasture boarding in a co-op format. Our commitment to this approach precludes the establishment of drama driven stables, as well as activities such as performance, jumping, dressage and cutting (oh and can’t forget the drama).

DON’T WASTE YOUR TIME BY READING FURTHER if you require one of the aforementioned activities now or in the future or have ever been called dramatic, highfalutin or have been rude/disrespectful to others, we will not be for you!

Our unique offering centers around the creation of an open concept where we let the animals graze freely; having a fence right down the middle to rotational graze to continue to keep the pasture as a whole flourishing. Patrons have the liberty to engage with their equine companions according to their preferences, immersing themselves as much or as little as desired. This is irregular with 100% self care facilities given you are confined to managing your horse’s care 24/7. With our co-op style, your time commitment of feeding will be approximately 1-2 hours a week, so you can reserve the remainder of your time for riding, companionship, grooming and FUN!

Amidst thirteen acres of picturesque landscape, one can relish the panoramic views of Lake Lavon, and what the 25 mile Trinity Trail has to offer as the entrance is onsite. All while resting assured that their beloved horse or other amiable farm animals are experiencing a life aligned with their inherent nature. This entails access to communal hay bales, a consistent supply of fresh water, and refuge from the rigors of the Texan climate, including both the scorching heat and the occasional inclement weather.

We are sure you are asking yourself by now, “What about daily feedings, vet and ferrier visits?”…Outlined below are the two well crafted boarding options we offer which cover the basics: hay, water, shelter, pasture, tack room AND what is expected of you, the owner– and this is why we use the term co-op. We do not have ranch hands, or any hired help; our boarders operate as a collective to feed in the evenings daily, they manage group vet/ferrier visits as well. As a self care boarder you are responsible for sharing the workload. You are welcome to use your own vet and/or ferrier if you so choose. Offering too many options has provided to be difficult and result in lack of miscommunications and worst yet expectations not being met.

Luckily, the owners do live on property and maintain the grounds. A few things that have been done:

  • Pasture grass is planted and maintained for max foraging all year round
  • Hay huts with slow feed netting to control consumption and minimize waste
  • Keep an open line of communication on the group chats, especially during inclement weather
  • Making improvements regularly such as adding a second large shelter in 2022
  • Improved the feeding area to include wooden posts with quick releases
  • Always making themselves available for any emergencies, questions, comments and more

What Else?

Please do not hesitate to ask for clarification or if any other questions pop up. We welcome all friends, family and trainers to come enjoy your horse and its home. Wild Estate does not have any in-house trainers at this time nor do we offer individual rides but that may be coming soon.

We have a well rounded group of seasoned horse owners and if you board with us you are able to utilize their wealth of knowledge as needed. Additionally, we favor an open line of communication via group chats so you know when others are riding, coordinating vet/ferrier visits, feeding and more.

Any and all guests have to sign our liability form to ensure they understand the rules and acknowledge our protocols when on property and if handling horses.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you help me understand "co-op" better?

Coop horse boarding is similar to self care boarding. It is when you are fully responsible for your horse’s care and supplies, but you are in a barn community of other boarders  (owners of various experiences and methods of handling horses caring for your horse) and you share the workload such as the daily feedings.

The fact that you share the workload and don’t have to come to the barn 2x per day everyday is a bonus for the right boarder.

What additional costs are there outside of my monthly board?

Standard costs that go into boarding a horse outside of board are as follows: grain, grain bin, any tack (we provide safety tie and cross tie with panic snap), medicine or supplements, ferrier, vet bills. Having a horse is a large fiscal responsibility.

How often will I see the owners?

You will meet the owner, Eileen, to get a tour prior to signing any agreements. She will give you the lay of the land and make sure you are a fit. The owners live on property and manage the grounds and upkeep. They do not feed the horses but will be present during feedings on occasion. Depending on when you come you may see them but they always welcome any and all communication.

What type of fence do you have?

We have primarily barbed wire mixed with some wood and metal panels for both the feeding area and round pen. We ask that new horses are walked around the property to get aquainted. We have not had any issues with barbed wire and it keeps in our smaller, more curious other animal friends. We will not be changing away from barbed wire, only making improvements as it ages, so if you or your horse are not comfortable with this then W.E. is not for you unfortunately.

Where are you located? What are your hours?

We are located at 2550 Welborn Lane in Lucas, TX 75002. We are not far from the City of Lucas Park, where the large water tower is. Our hours are very flexible, you can come and go as you please. any day, any time. We just ask that you respect the property and the noise level as the owners do live onsite.

What discounts do you offer, if any? ex: multiple horses

At this moment we are not offering any discounted board. We can discuss further if you have multiple horses so please inquire about that.

Why is pasture boarding the only offering?

The owners purchased 13 acres to live on back in 2019 and wanted to share it with those interested, and pasture board is the most humane way an animal should live out their days. Wild Estate offers a simplistic vision of pasture board and we understand it is not for everyone but for those who do love what we are offering hope you check us out as we would love to have you.

How does payment for board work?

Wild estate will take payment the 1st of the month via Zelle or Venmo, other arrangements can be made but those are preferred. Late fees will be accessed if payment is not rendered within the first few days of each month.

What is the max amount of animals you will have on property?

We currently board 7 horses (3 mares and 4 geldings) with 5 mini cow adults and 2 under a year. We will mostly grow to have 1 horse per acre. The cows come and go and given they are mini they do not take up as much space as full sized beef cattle. We will not be getting rid of our cows to bring on more horses so if your horse is not friendly (or you are not) with other farm animals then unfortunately boarding at Wild Estate will not work.

How often are round bales put out?

We purchase hay in bulk and utilize hay huts to minimize waste. Two bales are typically put out weekly or every 10 days. The animals never go without even during the drought season.

Do you accept stallions?

No, we have a mixed herd meaning both mares and gelding co-exist together in the same pasture. We will not be accepting any stallions nor will we accept problematic horses, they should be pleasant to be around with all ages especially in a group.

Do you have a bathroom onsite?

We have a composting toliet and camping sink available to use located in the tack room. There is a toliet located at the City of Lucas park if you require something fancier. We also have solar hooked up in the tack room for lights and a fan.

How are the pastures maintained?

Routine maintence in the form of tilling, mowing, planting of pasture grass happens throughout the year. The pasture is also dragged regularly to break up manure. A pasture blade was purchased in Jan. 2023 to scoop up and remove manure through a specific manure cart offered by the City of Lucas. This reduces flies year round and continues to keep a nice enviornment for all.
